Spanish maple tree11/30/2023 Large metal mesh panels stuffed with processed Spanish moss fibers were installed on the back wall of the greenhouse. A furnace kept the greenhouse warm in the winters, but cooling the greenhouse in summer was an interesting task. In 1962, my father built a greenhouse to germinate tree and plant seeds. A story circulates that Henry Ford refused to continue using the plant for padding after several seats were found to be infested with red bugs.Īs a young boy, I was fortunate to experience the “swamp cooler” use of Spanish moss at my father’s tree nursery. Throughout history, man has found numerous uses of Spanish moss, including insulation, furniture, and padding in seat cushions during the early days of the automobile. Without roots, the plant spreads by seeds, windblown fragments, birds, and wildlife, who use Spanish moss for nesting materials. The Southern live oak and bald cypress are the dominant host trees due to their increased ability to release nutrients like magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus, which the plant absorbs. Even dust provides nourishment to the plant. A member of the Bryophyte or bromeliad family, the plant survives by absorbing nutrients from the air and rain. Spanish moss derives no nutrients from a host tree, being an epiphyte, or air plant. You can find Spanish moss in unique locations such as Carolina bays, marshlands, swamps, and wetlands. Ranging from Argentina to the Southern United States, Spanish moss thrives in tropical and subtropical climates. Spanish moss is predominantly found in the South Carolina Lowcountry due to the prevalence of heat and humidity in the region. We treasure the sight of Spanish moss swaying in the wind from the boughs of a Southern live oak, a marriage of two Southern cultural and visual icons, exciting our senses as we experience South Carolina’s unique beauty. It’s not native to Spain, or a moss for that matter. Examples include: aglaia, amoora, bekak, and tasua.īeing in the Meliaceae (mahogany) family, Pacific maple can be thought of as almost a cross between two more well-known Meliaceae spceies: Honduran mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) and Spanish cedar (Cedrela odorata).Called it tree beard, early French settlers called it Spanish beard - reminding them of the long beards worn by Spanish conquistadors. However, Pacific maple is simply an international trade name, and it’s more commonly mixed with other Aglaia lumber species and simply called by a more generic name varying depending on the country of origin. It’s unclear how the common name came about, as the resemblance to maple isn’t apparent in either the tree or the wood. It was formerly (1998) classified as being near threatened, but was later (2008) reclassified as being data deficient due to lack of information on its habitat, distribution, and population status.Ĭommon Uses: Interior construction, furniture, cabinetry, veneer, boatbuilding, gunstocks, tool handles and other turned objects.Ĭomments: Despite its common name, Pacific maple is not related to the true maples in the Acer genus. Sustainability: This wood species is not listed in the CITES Appendices, but is reported by the IUCN as being data deficient. Expect prices to be in the mid range for a domestic hardwood. Pricing/Availability: Not commonly exported, availability is most likely limited to locally harvested trees within its natural range. See the articles Wood Allergies and Toxicity and Wood Dust Safety for more information. Īllergies/Toxicity: Although severe reactions are quite uncommon, wood in the Aglaia genus has been reported to cause skin and respiratory irritation. Odor: Has a pleasant, lingering odor that’s been compared to both cedar and camphor (Cinnamomum camphora). Has a tendency to warp or deform during initial drying, although dimensional stability is good once dry. Workability: Easy to work with hand and machine tools. Rot Resistance: Varies depending on particular Aglaia species and growing conditions of the tree, but is generally considered as moderately durable-though susceptible to powder post beetles. Has a fine, even texture and moderate natural luster. Grain/Texture: Grain is usually interlocked, and quartersawn surfaces can exhibit a ribbon-stripe grain pattern. Frequently color is linked to density-heavier pieces tend to be darker in color. Color/Appearance: Can range in color from a pale brown to a darker reddish brown.

Yoshis were originally going to be a special type of Koopa Troopa. The Yoshis have also inhabited Isle Delfino as mentioned by a Toad.Additionally, Yoshi has an alternative name "Yoshisaurus", which is a reference to dinosaurs, as a lot of them has the affix "saurus". Yoshis are similar to dinosaurs and other real life creatures.Yoshis of several colors can be seen in the background as Mario, Princess Peach, and Toad are exploring a forest. In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, these Yoshis are available from the start. They can be unlocked so long as the The Legend of Zelda x Mario Kart 8 or Animal Crossing x Mario Kart 8 has been purchased. Multiple colored Yoshis racing in Mario Kart 8īesides Yoshi, some other colored Yoshis are playable racers in Mario Kart 8. However, the Yoshis are capable of speaking perfect human-language as seen in Paper Mario.Īs seen in Paper Mario, the Yoshis are governed by a chief Yoshi, a tribal leader-like Yoshi that has a large physique with a feather on his head. However, in Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time, they make a few sounds from Super Mario 64 DS. Oddly, most Mushroom Kingdom characters are able to understand the Yoshi language.Īs seen in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and, due to the text bubbles of the game, when the Yoshis talk, their words are enclosed in parenthesis. In later games, the language consists of numerous exclamations and unintelligible noises. In older games, like in Super Mario World, the Yoshies' only "voice" was an odd sound created by a reversed record scratching sound effect. Yoshis inhabit the Mushroom World, generally within Yoshi's Island or some other tropical island.Īlthough some Yoshis can speak the language of most citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom, the Yoshi have developed their own language of sorts. Para Yoshis can also shoot fireballs out of their mouths just like after eating a Red Koopa Shell.Īs seen in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, if the Yoshis are fed special fruit called Bean Fruit, then they could produce colorful Neon Eggs. The Para Yoshi can fly, and it is Yoshi's Final Smash in Super Smash Bros. In Super Mario Galaxy 2, they can use their tongues as grappling hooks this is similar to one of the things they could do in Yoshi's Story. However, they cannot stand water, as they dissolve the moment they touch it. In Super Mario Sunshine, they can change color depending on which fruit they eat and can squirt juice from said fruit from their mouths. They are also able to transform into different vehicles. Yoshis are also able to do Ground Pounds. Another ability is the Flutter Jump which allows them to gain extra height after a jump. From there, they can transform enemies in their mouths into eggs, and throw the eggs, or they could spit the enemy back out. One of the Yoshis' key abilities is to grab enemies with their tongues. Beretta checkmate industries contract11/29/2023 I've used Beretta, Beretta-produced MDS and Check-Mate magazines in my 92s. very temporarily, and then the spring quickly reverts to it's previously weakened state. If there's insufficient spring tensility, REPLACE the spring-don't attempt a "field-expedient" stretch fix-it works, at best, only very. Keep the tubes clean, and don't mangle the springs during maintenance. I STRONGLY suspect that the most significant issue inherent to springage is maltreatment at the operator level, with springs inappropriately/inadvertantly/carelessly stretched, and then re-inserted-such compromises the integrity of the tensility.Ī simple protocol for Check-Mate magazines: Use the dry-film ones-which'll be any with a 2005 and later rollmarked date on the tube sides, (on one or both sides). Tube/baseplate exteriors receive a protective coat of Weapon Shield. I do, however, initially and periodically disassemble them, clean them, apply Dry-Slide (a dry-film molydisulfide lubricant/anticorrosive) to the inside of the tubes, followers, baseplate inners and the springs. Again, zero issues encountered-and my magazines aren't exactly babyied in use. I've kept several of my magazines loaded for months at a time. All of mine are their standard springs, save for one, which is an experimental stainless steel one that never made it into full production. I've personally had exactly zero problems with the sprigs in all of my Check-Mate 92 magazines. A subsequent DoD contractor of 92 magazines, Airtronics, WAS reputedly selected primarily based on bid price after a relatively brief period, the contract was re-let to Check-Mate. 40 per magazine-DoD declined.Īnother sidebar comment: Check-Mate was not chosen as the DoD M9 magazine contractor based on their being the lowest cost bid-their selection was based on their being adjudged by DoD a superior performer of previous contracts/products. At one point, Check-Mate offered DoD to refinish all stocke of the phosphate coated magazines with the dry-film finish, at a cost of. The dry-film magazines have performed superbly, and also have what I consider to be a advantageous hardened steel, low profile baseplate. Unfortunately, the PHOSPHATE coated magazines were not purged from the theatre-both magazine types were intermixed at the arms-room/unit level, according to my understanding. Check-Mate, upon hearing reports of magazine issues in-theatre, actually imported some sand from the theater, analyzed the proble, and provided an alternative dry-film finish, whach was approved by DoD and massively injected into the suppky chain. Obviously, that finish was a massive "fail" in Iraq and Afghanistan. DoD's original intention was that the phosphate coating, applied both externally and internally, would be ideal for corrosion prevention in temperate climates (which in fact all reports that I've come across indicates that it does). Regarding the original phosphate finish-it's essential to understand that it was a DoD CONTRACT MANDATED finish, not something Check-Mate chose willy-nilly on their own. All Check-Mate magazines have a lifetime warranty, and Check-Mate stands behind them.ĭoD magazine issues: There are two: One, the original (up to late 2004) DoD specified phosphate finish, applied internally and externally a crackle-type finish, its ridges trapped the fine talc-like sand/dust indegenous to Iraq and Afghanistan, precluding effective cartridge travel inside the magazine and Two, allegedly insufficient spring tensility. Check-Mate found it to be slightly oversize, sent it through the sizing die, and returned it to me-where it's performed without any subsequent hiccups. During this period I've had exactly one magazine issue: One of the magazines was slightly oversize towards the tube base it would easily insert and flawlessly chamber cartridges, but would not drop free from the frame without manually pulling it out. Ok.over several years, I've had some detailed discussions with Check-Mate's partners over the 92 magazines-and I've been running 8 of the dry-film ones of varying vintages (2005, 2008, 2010) interchangeably for carry and for thousands of rounds. The sponsorship was a nice gesture I genuinely appreciate and prefer their magazines for my Beretta 92D and various 1911 regardless of the sponsorship. Obligatory Disclosure: I'm one of Check-Mate Industries' sponsored shooters, which came about after agreeing to field test their 1911 and 92 magazines over a period of several years. Checkmate Industry mags.Doc, I'm gonna call you on this one.

Uncut gems howard11/29/2023 Uncut Gems won’t be an easy film to re-watch, but the exceptional performances and direction make this a film that will easily stay with you for days later.Written and directed by the Safdie brothers, Josh and Benny, as a vehicle for two icons, funnyman Adam Sandler and basketball great Kevin Garnett, Uncut Gems (2019) is breathtakingly profane, alarming, and comic. The scene demonstrates the Safdies’ ability to orchestrate a calculated scene of chaos and sound into a scene that displays Howard’s comfortability in dealing with such a complicated and overwhelming situation. As the yelling and arguing continue, he is finally able to let them enter which only pushes Howard further into his self-made hole. The dialogue is unbelievably fast-paced, creating a cacophony of sound, leaving you anxious for the outcome of the scene which could end anywhere from a polite conversation to a murder. This scene encapsulates Howard’s ability to stand on the edge of a knife as his bets and pawning are slowly beginning to catch up with him and threatening to reveal him for the con-man he is. His security door is failing to open, and Garnett is losing patience for Howard’s fast-talking manipulation. His obsession with the gem propels the story forward and links Howard’s high-stakes gambling with a face that is present throughout.Īt one point in the film, Howard finds himself in a tense predicament, requiring his expensive gem back after lending it to Garnett in good faith. With his notoriety as an exceptional player, the Uncut Gems version of himself has this celebrity presence with him, while at the same time carrying this sympathy for Howard and his hectic lifestyle as a gambling addict. Kevin Garnett’s performance as himself when he was still a basketballer was solid for a sportsman turned actor, as his character seemed to be the sanest person on screen, carrying a remarkable gravity. Howard makes all the wrong decisions and consistently keeps you on the edge of your seat as his debt increases and the various loan sharks circle. Sandler turns Howard, a pathologically self-destructive narcissist, into a character that we can’t help but emotionally invest ourselves in-to the point that you root for his seemingly impossible success and happiness. However, after watching the film and then hearing the announcement that Sandler had been snubbed and not received an Oscar nomination, I was furious at the panel for their short-sightedness and inability to look past Sandler’s previous work. I mean, we know Sandler as this goofball whose productions have gone severely downhill since his ‘prime’ in the ’90s. When people began muttering about an Oscar nomination for Sandler, I audibly laughed. He was unrecognisable as the Billy Maddison/Happy Gilmour Sandler we have grown to expect, instead morphing entirely into his new character. However, what can initially be perceived as chaos on later reflection demonstrates a storytelling intent by the directors as we watch Howard (Sandler) go from one terrible situation to the next.Īdam Sandler’s portrayal of Howard Ratner was exceptional. With the intense speed of the dialogue and plot momentum, the film felt like absolute chaos throughout until the credits rolled and I remembered to start breathing again. While not completely clear initially, the significance of the ’80s motif combined with the jewel becomes clear as the plot progresses. The film starts with an ’80s style visual inside a gem. Uncut Gems follows a New York City jeweller who is hell-bent on finding the next amazing deal and the next high-stakes bet, even if it means his reputation or life. Uncut Gems Directed by: Benny Safdie and Josh Safdie Runtime: 135 minutes

Leader move forward jail allowing us11/29/2023 To hold people accountable, the Department of Justice helped create “Suspicious Activity Report” (also known as criminal referrals). Banks and real estate companies collapsed, customers lost their savings, and taxpayers had to help foot the bill. (Black is a former financial regulator and a white-collar criminologist.)īut the FSLIC insurance fund only had $6 billion. But the heads of S&Ls started skimming company funds and approving speculative loans, which they received prison sentences for.īy mid-1982, the savings and loan industry as a whole was insolvent by roughly $150 billion, said William Black, an associate professor of economics and law at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. Under new state and federal rules, they were actually allowed to make these riskier investments. S&Ls started getting into a bunch of riskier things, like commercial real estate lending and junk bonds. Germain Depository Institutions Act, which removed the caps and enabled S&Ls to make risky loans using deposits insured by the Federal Savings and Loans Insurance Corporation, or FSLIC. In 1982, PresidentRonald Reagan signed the Garn-St. So S&L customers started putting their money in accounts with bigger returns, like money market funds. Thing is, savings and loan associations had a cap on the amount of interest they were allowed to pay. When interest rates rise, savings accounts are usually able to pay more interest on the amount of money you deposit. To combat growing inflation, Fed Chair Paul Volcker decided to raise the federal funds rate to 20 percent in 1981, which would be considered astronomical by today’s standards. Many of the people involved with those first two scandals were prosecuted for financial fraud and went to jail.
